12.5 pence for Paul and Ringo
Over 500,000 music artists will now get royalties when their songs are played on YouTube clips, or when users upload a clip containing a track.
The royalties arrive courtesy of a new deal between YouTube and the MCPS-PRS Alliance, a UK-based group that collects music royalties for publishers.
The Alliance, which licensed 10 million tracks for use on YouTube, Google gave no financial figures numbers, but thinks the fruits of the relationship are likely "to stretch into the tens of millions of pounds," according to the Guardian.
While YouTube isn't yet out of hot water regarding the ongoing matter of copyright infringement, it's a step in a favorable direction for artists and the music industry.
