YouTube Goes Long-Form for Filmmakers

Overnight celebrity

YouTube is giving independent filmmakers the ability to distribute long-form movies on the site, reports Variety.

In the past, video length on YouTube could not exceed 10 minutes.

Independent filmmakers that join YouTube's Screening Room program can upload videos of up to 1GB — a file size that allows nearly the length of a feature film, says Silicon Alley Insider. A standard-definition version of Semi-Pro, which consumes 1.1GB of space, is one hour and 38 minutes long.

YouTube shall place ads in the films and split revenue between itself and producers.

Every week, the company will select four independent productions to highlight on its homepage. Filmmakers are also permitted to link to a DVD or digital download for purchase.
