Bye bye, bay
Yahoo is shutting down FareChase, a travel bargain website it acquired in July 2004 and relaunched in '06. After this afternoon, visitors to FareChase will be redirected to its primary travel site, travel.yahoo.com.
FareChase enabled users to run price-comparison searches for flights, hotels, cruises and cars. According to TechCrunch, FareChase's technology and user base did not provide sufficiently significant enhancements to Yahoo's core travel unit, hence the decision to cut it loose.
Prior to this, Yahoo sold shopping search engine Kelkoo and shut down Briefcase, an online storage service. It also castrated social network Mash, Yahoo Photos, Ads in RSS, live video streaming service Yahoo Live, student community board KickStart and video editing service JumpCut.
