After saying he would bring TV-like original programming to the web, Yahoo's Lloyd Braun, head of its Media Group and former ABC Entertainment chairman, said those efforts would be scaled back to instead focus on acquiring content from other media companies and users, reports the New York Times. "I didn't fully appreciate what success in this medium is really going to look like," Braun is quoted as saying. "I now get excited about user-generated content the way I used to get excited about thinking about what television shows would work," Braun said, pointing to Yahoo's Winter Olympics site, which featured Flickr photos.
With advertisers moving chunks of budgets online, the market for online content is expanding. Media companies are developing video-based web programming, and user-generated content sites, such as MySpace and YouTube.com, are attracting millions of user - and boatloads of advertisers.
Yahoo will retain "Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone" as well as "Richard Bangs Adventures.". But the revival of "The Runner" has been axed.
