Yahoo and Google will soon offer wireless services with features similar to those on computers, writes Reuters, citing a Wall Street Journal report. The moves will help move along the evolution of cell phones into handheld devices for accessing email, browsing the web, downloading music, and watching TV. Google is modifying its services for use on wireless devices, and starting today users of some types of cell phones will be able to access satellite maps using Google Local when they conduct searches for businesses or services.
Yahoo, meanwhile, will introduce a cell phone that it will sell through a partnership with SBC, bringing Yahoo a step closer to being able to link music, photos and email with users' online accounts, address books and preferences.
The SBC-Yahoo phone will be manufactured by Nokia and is expected sometime early next year. Operating on the Cingular Wireless network, the phone will also be an MP3 player and a 1.3 megapixel camera, and it will have a removable memory card.
