Yahoo launched a beta of Yahoo Search Subscriptions late Wednesday, allowing searches for information on subscription-based and password-protected websites, CNET reports. For now, it is available only in the U.S. and the U.K. Users of the service must have subscriptions at the targeted sites to gain full access to the information. Users can add as many of the available subscription sites as they want to their search preferences. They can also search for results either from only the subscription sites or along with results from the rest of the web.
The subscription-only search results will not display ads. "We have no plans at this time to add search-related advertising," said Tim Mayer, director of product management at Yahoo Search. "We see this really, rather than a way to make money, as a way to get people to be loyal…and to provide extra value over our competition."
The new service now allows search access to seven sites, including the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal Online, ConsumerReports.org, TheStreet.com, The New England Journal of Medicine, Forrester Research and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. LexisNexis, Factiva and the Association of Computing Machinery websites are expected to be added in coming weeks.
