Yahoo Launches Proprietary Universal Search

Yahoo has revamped its core search engine to return multimedia results from across the web and within its network of sites, reports The Associated Press.

The new search functionality suggests search syntax to users as they type. Results will also feature items from Flickr, Upcoming.org and other services owned by Yahoo. Flickr's library of photos especially provides a unique repository of content Yahoo can draw upon to differentiate itself.

Yahoo hopes the new features will boost its market share, a boost that would also its revenue as it hopes its Panama contextual ad display network will match those better results with better ads. But frankly, the upgraded search function - which currently lacks a catchy name - is designed to prevent further dominance of the market by current search leader Google.

Results containing video, audio, images and more are becoming standard in the search engine market. Both Google and IAC-owned Ask.com have added such features in the last several months to discourage people from running searches in different niche engines.
