A musical new relationship between Yahoo and Gracenote has made some song lyrics available online, but other issues regarding lyrics remain unresolved, reports ZDNet.
At issue is how much artists should be paid for distribution of their lyrics.
Customers of online music download or subscription services do not receive viewable or searchable lyrics as part of their purchase. This is primarily because licensing fees make doing so financially untenable. Gracenote, though, believes additional revenue will soon be possible for music publishers who make lyrics available.
The relationship between Yahoo and Gracenote deal grants Gracenote a portion of advertising revenue generated from its lyrics site. Gracenote then pays rights holders of the lyrics.
The words to 400,000 songs are currently available online. The company plans on adding more as additional deals are worked out.
