Wired: Sites Reconsider X-Rated Domain
Hoping to avoid potentially stiff legal penalties as a result of new laws, porn web site operators are reconsidering a proposal for an XXX top level domain. While this domain would not be forced upon porn publishers, it may stem further attempts to externally regulate the industry.
This appears to be a smart move in the direction of self-regulation. Porn publisher could still maintain a dot com gateway to their site, yet the actual X-rated content would reside within the dot XXX domain. It would be no more difficult than it is today to get to porn if one chooses that direction. But it would make it far simpler to block this top level domain from unsuspecting children through software or IP blocking than it is to block individual site access.
