Big changes are afoot at Sprint Nextel.
Rick Robinson, a Sprint VP, preached about the advantages of the carrier's soon-to-launch xOhm WiMax service at the Play conference in Berkeley, CA.
Mobile carriers provide internet service over their own decks, often called "walled gardens" since they limit access. With xOhm, Sprint opens access instead.
"Xohm will tear down this wall. We will provide complete access to Internet from a WiMax enabled device," Robinson said.
Instead of infringing on the web experience, Sprint will simply provide the "network elements," according to GigaOM: "location, presence, security, quality of service, and bandwidth. The rest of the magic comes from device companies and app makers."
Sprint made headlines in July after forging a WiMax partnership with Google, a company very interested in opening the mobile medium.
