CNET: Extra! Wall Street Journal gives away Web content
Stuck in a paid subscription ghetto, The Wall Street Journal hopes to increase exposure to the internet by briefly opening up its content for free. November 8, the newspaper will remove its subscription requirements for five days. Recently the paper has been sending unfettered links to certain stories to bloggers so that they might write on the content and link to it. The paper was the first and most successful major paper to whole heartedly go from free to fee, but since that time it has missed out major internet trends, such as the benefits of appearing on major search engines, having bloggers gin up additional interest, and major increases in advertising dollars.
