The march of technology may make it possible to beam power to devices wirelessly, meaning the end to the electrical plug, reports the UK's Daily Mail. They're calling it "WiTricity."
Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology successfully illuminated a 60-watt lightbulb from 7 ft. away. The innovation makes it possible to power laptops and mobile phones without batteries.
Called electromagnetic induction, the technology has been known for nearly two centuries. However, the technology required that the source and host be close to each other. The innovation on the technology came from creating an electromagnetic field in a room, instead of an em wave sent from one thing to another.
The only setback is that the technique has a 9 ft. limit, but they could extend the reach using batteries. Placing one source in each room would be enough to power any device nearby.
