Though widgets, which are tiny applications that can be embedded all over the Web, remain very popular, creators are still searching for a way to monetize them through advertising, reports AdWeek.
Slide, a widget application that turns user photos into slideshows, reaches a whopping 177.8 million users per month. However, advertising is limited to Slide.com, which reached only 13.4 million that month, according to ComScore.
Similarly, RockYou, the second-most popular widget maker, reached 82 million through its widgets, but only 7.4 million on RockYou.com.
Creators of the widgets are wary of adding advertising into the widgets, fearing user rebellion. Another major question is how widgets will share revenue with the sites upon which they appear.
