
AdAge reports that agency Lee and Dan, the admitted makers of the controversial faux VW ad won't return its phone calls, but ad blog Adland published a tongue-in-cheek interview with "Dan" yesterday morning in which he declined to say who funded the venture. He did mention it was made on 35mm film, an expensive process. That funder, along with "Dan" and, presumably a "Lee," are likely on the hook for legal trouble, as the AdAge report indicates VW is suing mad about the whole affair. But many aren't convinced VW wasn't responsible for initiating the ad, especially as a disavowed 2003 viral ad (consisting of a little girl over-using the word "bollocks," British slang for testicles) produced by its agency DDB turned out to have been created off of an agency creative brief and distributed with VW's knowledge. More doubts are surfacing on the web about VW's denial of involvement, as it turns out that Lee and Dan was reportedly given £40,000, according to the Media Guardian, for the shoot and access to the very newest model of Polo.
