After 226 days of incarceration, video blogger Josh Wolf says his release from jail is a victory for himself and the press, reports CNET.
Wolf had been imprisoned since last year, when he refused prosecutors' demands that he hand over the full video of a protest during which a police officer was injured. Wolf claimed a First Amendment principle was at stake, saying he was in fact a journalist, and the video was the equivalent of a journalist's notes, which are protected.
Wolf had refused to hand over the video or testify in front of a grand jury. His release was contingent on his answering two questions and posting the entire, unedited video on his blog. He agreed to answer the questions only if he could see them beforehand.
Wolf said he plans to start at least two new sites devoted to telling the stories of those still in prison and protecting press freedoms, including advocating a federal shield law for journalists.
