Associated Press (via Hoovers): VeriSign Launches Service for Web Typos
BizReport: VeriSign Eyes Valuable 'Junk' Traffic
After a week of testing, Verisign is officially launching Site Finder, its automated typosquatting product for redirecting users to paid sponsors when they mistype a domain name. The Wall Street Journal revealed Verisign's strategy last week. The program is expected to be active worldwide within the week.
Currently, users are redirected to a paid-inclusion search engine operated by Overture and Inktomi. While companies like AOL and MSN have operated a similar service in the past for mistyped URLs, it is believed that Verisign could easily bypass those ISPs, taking the traffic stream. Paxfire, a company that designs systems to redirect mistyped domain names, is believed to be a supplier for Verisign's technology.
[Editor's note: A report indicates that webmasters are finding ways to thwart the new system, configuring routers and servers to block the new Verisign pages.]
