To narrow its digital advertising focus, ValueClick is selling two business units for about $18 million.
Its inkjet refill cartridge business, formerly e-Babylon, was sold to an undisclosed buyer. ValueClick purchased e-Babylon in 2005 and, as a result, suffered a run-in with the Federal Trade Commission, which found e-Babylon "failed to secure consumers' sensitive financial information, despite claims to do so," reports ClickZ.
And Mediaplex Systems — whose offerings include AdVault, a media production and planning service — was acquired by MediaBank, a media planning platform based in Chicago. The latter will incorporate AdVault in its existing product suite. Inherited agencies, advertisers and other clients will be served as per usual.
ValueClick retained ownership of Mediaplex Mojo, the ad management and email component of Mediaplex. The company did not disclose separate financial details for the sales of Mediaplex Systems or the inkjet refill cartridge firm.
Earlier this year, ValueClick endured an FTC probe for seedy lead-generation activities. It later acquired comparison shopping site operator MeziMedia.
