Groxis is hoping to wean web searchers away from ranked lists of search results and has converted its Grokker software, which displays a Web search as a series of categories set in a circular map, to run as a Java plug-in for browsers, writes the New York Times. Today, the company will begin allowing users to view Yahoo search results with its visualization technology. Instead of charging for its program as it had been doing, beginning this week it will rely on revenue from Yahoo ads. The relationship is not exclusive, but Yahoo was apparently quicker than Google in creating a standard way to place relevant ads next to Grokker's circular search result maps. According to a spokesman, with the browser-based version of Grokker, the company had seen a higher rate of customers clicking on ads.
