Under the Microscope: Instant Previews Goes Mobile

What: Google has made Instant Previews available on mobile for Android (2.2+) and iOS (4.0+) devices. Similar to the desktop version of Instant Previews, the feature allows one to visually compare search results from webpage snapshots.

How it Works: To use Instant Previews on a mobile device, do a search on www.google.com and tap on the magnifying glass next to any search result. A side-by-side comparison view of the webpage previews for the first page of search results will appear. The user then taps on the preview to go to the website.

What it Means: When it first was released last November speculation was rampant about its impact on SEO. Google said it wouldn’t have an affect on rankings and there has been little said or theorized to show that it has. But many suspect the feature provides useful data to Google - data which will only increase now that it is going to be rolled out on mobile devices too.

GSQI writes: "Instant previews can send a powerful signal back to Google about the relevancy of the search results. … By using instant previews and then not clicking through, users can send that important feedback to Google. Then, based on collecting enough information about a giving search result, Google could potentially impact the future rankings of that listing."
