A United Nations working group has published a long-awaited report that effectively challenges U.S. control over internet domain names, reports CNET. The report says that "no single government should have a pre-eminent role in relation to international Internet governance" - directly contradicting the Bush administration's position, announced last month. The main concern for the group is who runs the internet and how it can better serve populations throughout the world. The states participating in the discussions listed four options ranging, from modest proposals to creating an entirely new "Global Internet Council" under U.N. auspices.
