Today Twitter unveiled a redesign consisting of "mostly cosmetic changes." Tabs were moved to the right sidebar and AJAX implemented for updates.
Page customization options for users are now limited to a set of templates whose colors can be changed, all bowing to Twitter's commitment to a "lighter, prettier, simplified" aesthetic.
Curiously absent from the redesign were any efforts resembling a business model, ad-wise or otherwise (Twitter still lacks a viable profit strategy). And Silicon Alley Insider noted a more sophisticated search feature had not been integrated. Twitter purchased third-party search site Summize in July, suggesting intentions to incorporate the technology at some point.
Earlier this month, Yammer — a kind of Twitter for businesses — swept the TechCrunch50. Yammer enables companies to create internal Twitter communities in exchange for a monthly fee. Like Twitter, it is both desktop- and mobile-phone-ready.
