Twitter's Promoted Accounts ad format are now in Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for Android. In addition, in the coming weeks, the company plans to introduce Promoted Tweets in the timeline on these mobile apps.
The new service is rolling out initially to a small number of users. Promoted Tweets will appear in the timeline like any other Tweet. As the user scrolls, the Promoted Tweet will flow with the rest of the Tweets in the timeline. Promoted Tweets will only be displayed in the timeline when they are relevant, Twitter says—any Promoted Tweet that isn’t relevant can be dismissed from the timeline with a single swipe.
The ads won’t display to all Twitter users, though, Wired says–users of third-party mobile clients won’t see the Promoted Tweets "something bound to be a point of continued tension between Twitter and the developers who use its API."
Wired also noted that Twitter users have bitterly complained about past attempts to place Promoted Trends in a mobile app, and that Twitter quickly caved.
500 Million Users
This new offering follows by a week a milestone Twitter reached—namely it achieved 500 million registered users. Twitter will reach 500 million registered users on Wednesday. It also follows a recently-launched self-serve ad platform for small businesses.
