GameTap, a subscription-based game download service provided by Turner, is expanding into free ad-supported gameplay, reports Next Generation.
GameTap, which snags 2 to 3 million unique vistors a month for its $9.95 subscription service, permits gamers to download up to 850 different games to their PCs. With the ad-supported model, users will be able to flip-flop between different types of free and paid memberships.
At the "green level," registered users can play free games with multiplayer and community features. Free games will be limited to 30 rotating titles featuring ads before and after play.This ad-supported version of the service will enable more people to try GameTap, thereby leading to more subscribers.
Turner's existing ad relationships include TV networks like TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network and CNN, all of which are eager to jump into the gaming adspace.
GameTap launched in 2005 and has tripled its number of available games in two years. The company is presently also discussing a major software deal with Eidos that will empower it to launch games on the same day as new retail releases.
