TRUSTe today began the first certification program assuring consumers that marketers won't spam them when they submit their email addresses online, DM News reports. The nonprofit privacy certification organization's "We Don't Spam" program and seal were announced at the DoubleClick Email Solutions Summit in Denver. The seal signifies that the email reputation and practices of the marketers using it have been reviewed and met standards "that eliminate the threat of unwanted email," according to TRUSTe.
By increasing consumer trust, the program will help increase online registration rates, TRUSTe said. One tested of the seal reportedly resulted in a 7 percent uptick in registrations.
DoubleClick, a founding partner of the program, and Return Path, the exclusive reseller of the seal, want their email clients to use it. The seal's cost to senders will be based on overall company revenue and volume of email it sends.
The "We Don't Spam" program is part of an ongoing monitoring program; TRUSTe will monitor consumer complaints and enforce the seal.
