Top Sites Dominate as Shopping Referrers

WestSideStory: Google, Yahoo, MSN, and AOL Account For More Than 90 Percent of Search Referrals to Shopping Web Sites

When it comes to finding shopping sites on the Web this holiday season, consumers worldwide are relying on four main search engines to get them there. As of Dec. 1, 2002, Google, Yahoo, MSN and AOL accounted for 92.79 percent of all global search referrals to shopping Web sites, according to an independent report from WebSideStory.

Google was first with a referral percentage of 27.16 percent to shopping Web sites, followed by Yahoo (25.92), MSN (24.11) and AOL NetFind (15.60). […]

Google and MSN made the biggest leaps in referring Internet users to shopping sites over the last year. Both climbed 8.7 percentage points from Dec. 1, 2001, StatMarket reported. AOL climbed 7 percentage points from last year, while Yahoo lost referral share to shopping sites by more than 15 percentage points, from 41.41 percent to 25.92 percent, during the same time period, according to StatMarket.
