TomTom now owns MapMaps
The world's biggest maker of car navigation devices, TomTom plans to buy its primary map supplier, Tele Atlas, for $2.5 million, reports The Globe and Mail.
The move came with the knowledge that double-digit profit margins on hardware are expected to decline.
TomTom and Tele Atlas plan to tap into TomTom's userbase to improve out of date maps and gather statistical info on traffic flows to create new features, such as predicting traffic jams. Already, Tom Tom receives 16,000 error reports per month from its users.
Tele Atlas also provides online mapping for Google Maps and Nokia.
