Digital video recorder (DVR) maker TiVo announced today that TiVo owners would be able to transfer recorded TV shows onto Apple's video iPod and on Sony's handheld PSP game machine, reports the New York Times. The new software to allow the transfers will be released in the first quarter of 2006.Users will have to pay TiVo up to $30 to unlock the portion of the new software that converts videos to the MPEG-4 format used by iPod and PSP.

In February TiVo released its TiVoToGo, which allowed users to transfer programs to personal computers and DVDs as well as portable video players that support Microsoft's mobile video format - but those players have not been popular; the video iPod and PSP will allow TiVo to tap into much larger market.

The new TiVo software will have a syncing feature, allowing subscribers to automatically transfer new recordings to their portable devices via their PCs.
