TiVo is teaming up with online video firm Brightcove Networks to deliver web-based programming to TiVo's broadband DVRs; the service will allow users to record online videos from Brightcove's several-hundred content partners, including MTV's Teen Channel and National Lampoon's TogaTV.com. The Associated Press quotes Brightcove founder and CEO Jeremy Allaire as saying, "This is the first partnership for us to get content directly to the TV set."
TiVo and Brightcove will select which web-based programs will debut in June on TiVo's Series 2 DVRs. They would be offered for free, at least initially, but will likely be supported by advertising.
Brightcove's technology gives small or large producers a way to create online video and syndicate through its distribution channels, including AOL's web portal starting this summer.
