Time for an upgrade
Nortel Networks has prepared a technology that enables telecoms to quadruple the capacity of their networks. This would empower them to respond to the bandwidth demands of increased online video viewing and HD programming, reports Reuters.
The optics-based solution delivers speeds of 40 gigabits per second (Gbps), four times faster than typical networking speeds of 10 Gbps. Denmark's TDC and Britain's Neos Networks have already purchased it, and it is reportedly being tested among other carriers.
Nortel will announce the technology today — and not a moment too soon. In the US, Time Warner has begun testing tiered broadband models to better distribute its bandwidth load. Across the pond, the success of BBC's iPlayer has conceived discussions about how best to manage video-based bandwidth demands.
Nortel expects its product will spur sales as online media habits continue to challenge the limits of data transfer speeds. The Toronto-based company has struggled with consumer apathy, Asian competitors and a volatile market.
