Tech Co's Cry Foul Over Misleading Copyright Warnings

I declare shenanigans!

A tech industry trade group is calling on the FTC to crack down on content owners who portray copyright law as stricter than it really is, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The Computer and Communications Industry Association has filed a complaint with the FTC about these warnings. The group says movie studios, sports leagues and others are misleading the public regarding what is and isn't allowed under copyright law.

Major League Baseball's warning, for instance, could be interpreted to mean you cannot record a game for later viewing.

The fight over "fair use" of copyrighted materials is coming as media companies react poorly to the use of their material online. Many have sued sites that host clips of their content that's been uploaded by consumers.

Viacom's suit against YouTube is perhaps the biggest such example. The CCIA wants media companies to let people know that some use of copyrighted material is allowed under the fair use provision.

Google and Microsoft are just two of the technology heavy-hitters backing the CCIA and its petition with the FTC.
