Positive Super Bowl Reception Boosts Petty's Digital Sales

The freefall proves profitable

The well-received Super Bowl halftime show, performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, helped boost digital music sales for the band, reports Reuters.

The 12-minute set was seen by a record-breaking 97 million viewers.

Petty's final song of the set, "Free Fallin'," sold over 63,000 digital copies after the game. The band's "Greatest Hits" album sold 33,000 copies, 12,000 of which were digital. iTunes accounted for most of the sales.

Universal, which controls Petty's music catalog, boosted its online marketing in anticipation of the event.
