Study: Tech Strengthens Family Ties

A new study finds that although technology now allows families to jam 43 hours worth of activities into a 24-hour day, it also makes communication between family members much easier.

One of the key findings of the study was that technological advances create more hectic lives for online families, but also give them the tools to increase communication with other family members. Seventy percent of respondents said technology helps them stay connected with their family, and half of the members of the 18-34 demographic said that technology didn't merely aid communication - it was a necessity, CNET reports.

But highly digital families have a limit on how much advertising they can tolerate on various new media platforms. Though the majority of U.S.respondents said they don't mind ads in magazines and newspapers (72 percent), radio (60 percent) or TV (59 percent), mobile phones and MP3 players were places that users prefer not to see ads at all, MediaWeek writes.

The study, titled "It's a Family Affair: the Media Evolution of Global Families in a Digital Age," was sponsored by Yahoo and OMD. The study surveyed 4,500 online families in 16 countries, including North and South America, Asia, Australia and Europe.
