ClickZ reports on itproductivity.org stats showing Firefox's share of the browser market share more than doubling its marketshare to about 10 percent in the first three months of 2005. About a third of those gains appears to have come directly from share losses of Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which saw a loss of almost two percent.
Firefox's marketshare grew 6.05 percent to 10.28 percent of the market. Internet Explorer's share dropped 1.78 percent to hit 83.07 percent of the market. Other big losers were the old Netscape browsers (down 2.11 share points to 0.92 percent share) and AOL (down 1.35 share points to 2.20 percent share).
The study did not take into account Mac browsers, such as Safari, which other studies peg at approximately three percent share. Just last week reports surfaced of Google browser sightings in log files, although such appearances are easily faked.
Nielsen/NetRatings figures peg Firefox's marketshare at only about half of these new figures. Microsoft, for its part, plans to release a new version of IE in a matter of months.
