Jeff Molander of Revenews provides a summary of the Streamlined Sales Tax Project, an effort by state governments to simplify and modernize sales and use tax collection and administration. The SSTP, founded in 2000, has been in the news lately in connection with e-commerce taxation in the wake of a recent California court ruling against Borders that upholds the state's taxation of online sales. The Project is tackling issues such as uniform tax-law definitions, state-level administration, uniform sourcing rules, simplified exemption administration, audit procedures and state funding of the system.
