Sports teams are trying to take control of the resale process of tickets by offering services it hopes will benefit everyone, reports The New York Times.
Services like Flash Seats, which handles resales for the Cleveland Cavaliers, let season ticket holders opt for paperless tickets for games they attend. If the ticket holders want to resell those seats, they must go through Flash Seats to do so.
Teams are thus able to take a percentage of the resale price, something they cannot do if the seller uses eBay, Craigslist or another online auction/classified/ticket reselling site.
Because they have access to the secondary buyer's information, it also means teams can market to them directly.
Other ticket services have created similar ventures to increase both revenue and user satisfaction. Online ticket resales are often ridden with scammers selling fraudulent material. By creating a trusted hub for this niche, companies hope to get a bigger slice of the market.
