Spim Not a Spam-Level Threat

CNET: Experts downplay 'spim' threat

Analysts doubt that spim - spam through instant messaging - will ever arise to the level of cost and annoyance as spam. Yahoo also updated its IM client to make it harder to deliver unwanted messages. Just last summer, AOL added similar features into AOL 9.0.
