Speculators: NBCU Reorg Could Alter Network's Fate

NBC Universal — co-owner of video site Hulu.com and ad gatekeeper of this year's Beijing Olympics — is undergoing a restructuring at its studio and programming divisions.

Angela Bromstad, most recently president of NBCU's London-based international production unit, will head scripted programming for broadcast and the Universal Media Studios unit, MediaBuyerPlanner reports.

Former Dancing with the Stars producer Paul Telegdy will take over unscripted and specials programming.

Katherin Pope, president of Universal Movie Studios, was ousted, catalyzing a shockwave in Hollywood's creative community, many of which say her departure will have a negative impact on the network's fortunes, reports TV Week. Teri Weinberg, former Reveille programmer who joined NBCU as EVP-Entertainment in 2007, was also let go, prompting speculation that NBC Entertainment co-chair Ben Silverman, who also joined NBC from production company Reveille, might be on the way out. But NBCU chief Jeff Zucker said that, while the network has "not had a good fall," there has been no loss of confidence in Silverman or his co-chair Marc Graboff.

News of the reorganization came days after NBCU announced plans to swallow 500 jobs in a $500 million cost-cutting effort.

Last Monday NBC announced plans to "stream" a talk show across five nights of programming during primetime. Jay Leno, who leaves The Tonight Show in May, will host The Jay Leno Show at 10pm Monday through Friday. The show will save the network money, as it costs about one-tenth the cost of a fully-produced drama.

The TV network's made a number of moves to strengthen its position in the online space. In July this year it purchased The Weather Channel, which owns Weather.com. In October it liaised with Appssavvy to monetize a new Facebook app.

Meanwhile, its crown jewel Hulu continues to build momentum. Analysts suggest ad spend on Hulu could equal YouTube's in 2009, even though the latter is an older site with global reach, and year-old Hulu is confined to the continent.
