The AP reports that "Spam King" Sanford Wallace will stop using spyware to spawn annoying online ads as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. The agreement lasts only through the course of the trial concerning federal charges about his companies' advertising practices. His companies SmartBot.net and Seismic Entertainment Productions will be able to send ads only to those people who visit their websites. The U.S. government accused Wallace of using sleazy methods to seed computers with spyware, which would then create an annoying profusion of pop-up ads. He would then advertise to those infected users a product that purported to prevent such ads from appearing. And, the government further alleged, when people bought that anti-advertising technology, it would fail to work.
