Sony has developed an online promotion for the new Will Smith film "The Pursuit of Happyness", relying on themes from the movie and awarding a chance for the winner to land a dream job.
The promotion will run on Sony's video-sharing site Grouper, and have entrants submit a five-minute video of their "Words to Live By" and explaining why they should get an internship. Among the companies offering internships are the National Football League, the Gap, Morgan Stanley, People magazine, the Hollywood Reporter, NBC, PlayStation and Yahoo, Ad Age reports. The human resources departments of participating companies will pare down the applicant pool, which will then be voted on by users. The two finalists for each company will be awarded interviews. "The Ultimate Internship Contest" runs through November 5.
The promotion is the first in a series of marketing initiatives for Sony that will use Grouper, with SpiderMan 3 already in the works for a Grouper-based promotion. "The Ultimate Internship Contest" will play on themes in The Pursuit of Happyness, which is based on the true story of single-dad Chris Gardner who turned his life around after landing an internship as a stock broker.
Sony says fans will be attracted to the promotion's theme of landing the job of a lifetime and traffic to the promotion's site is already heavy.
