Sony Retires Digital Audio Format for Windows Media

ATRAC, meet Betamax

Sony has retired yet another proprietary format, which will be joining the ranks of Betamax videotapes and MiniDiscs.

The ATRAC audio format will be replaced with new players that support Windows Media Audio, MP3, and AAC formats in North America and Europe, according to AP News.

Sony already announced its surrender to Apple's iTunes with the closing of its Connect digital music store sometime next year.

The company also unveiled two new players at a tech show in Germany. In addition to supporting several formats, the players are packed with Microsoft's Windows Media Player 11 to manage digital libraries and can also play video.
