Digital Betamax on its way
Sony has revealed plans for a video-downloading service, accessible through its Playstation 3 console.
Known as the Playstation Network, it will tout a copyright-protected format based on open standards and a store open to all sellers, not just Sony Entertainment offerings.
The service will launch next year and allow gamers to transfer content between the PS3 and its PSP handheld console, according to BusinessWeek.
In addition to video, the service will sell music and software. By remaining open to all content creators, Sony is shifting strategy from its typical walled garden approach, so it can better compete with Apple and Microsoft.
Long-term, Sony wants to connect the Playstation Network with other Sony devices, such as Sony Ericsson handsets, and non-Sony devices.
