Sony PS3 to Launch TV Recorder Device in Europe

Play with me

Just days after API Research published news that gaming consoles would play an integral part in tomorrow's living room, Sony plans to release a device that lets users record live TV through the PS3 console in Europe.

The combined TV tuner and digital video recorder is called PlayTV, according to AP News. Sales in Spain, Germany, France, Italy, and Britain will begin in early 2008. Users will also be able to send recorded material to the PSP, a handheld gaming console.

PlayTV works well in Western Europe since all broadcasters operate on a standard format called Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial. US TV won't go entirely digital until early 2009, under new FCC laws.

That said, Sony had no news of when PlayTV will hit US shores or other parts of the world.
