MSNBC: Student faces suit on key to CD locks
SunnComm Technologies, who's "high-end" anti-piracy software is being used by BMG Music, is pressing charges against the Princeton University PhD student who posted 'detailed' instructions on how to foil their software. Apparently, John "Alex" Halderman's detailed instructions for "holding down the Shift Key" were enough to bring the legal dogs out.
SunnComm's solution makes use of the Windows AutoRun feature to automatically install software on the user's machine that blocks the copying. Beyond the issue of automatically installing software regardless of the user's preferences, the AutoRun feature is highly fragile, simply not working on many user's machines. And for some reason I'm unwilling to believe that instructions for holding down shift keys fall under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
