'The potential for saving
a life is staggering'
Online women's network SheKnows has committed to add 50,000 donors to the International Bone Marrow Registry by 2009. To promote the cause, it launched a bone marrow donor subsite.
"We are trying to make our readers aware of the importance of bone marrow donation," said director of technology Tony Pagliocco for SheKnows. "We want this to be a one-stop center for people looking for information."
The campaign was organized in partnership with bone marrow donor agency DKMS Americas and Save Giovanni's Friends, a charity started by Michael Guglielmo, whose infant son Giovanni was diagnosed with an immune system disorder.
"What I really want people to do is recognize that becoming a bone marrow donor is no longer a painful process," waxed Guglielmo. "If you are a match at some point, 80 percent of the cases involve a procedure similar to giving blood and it involves no pain.
"The potential for saving a life is staggering."
SheKnows reportedly serves 12 million unique visitors and 100 million page views per month. Donors must undergo an online registration process before their donor kits are received.
The network purchased ChefMom in May, at which time it also declared pregnancy "the new black."
