Sesame Street, a puppet-based children's show that's run on Public Broadcasting Service-affiliated stations for nearly forty years, joins more contemporary offerings on sites like iTunes, Hulu and YouTube, reports Reuters.
A Sesame Street channel on YouTube will feature over 100 clips from the show, including installments from Monsterpiece Theater. News Corp. and NBCU-owned Hulu will also host about 100 Sesame Street segments, plus 30 others featuring celebrity guests like Laurence Fishburne and Julia Roberts. Here, hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean sings "The Healthy Food Song" with Cookie Monster:
iTunes already hosts select Sesame Street segments, including "Talk, Listen, Connect," for children whose parents are military personnel deployed overseas, and "Happy Healthy Ready for School," featuring the popular red puppet Elmo.
Moving forward, online users may purchase episodes, from season 35, onward, on iTunes for $1.99. The Sesame Workshop will receive 70% of revenue from this particular deal.
Sesame Street viewers consist mostly of children, but the company is also counting on nostalgic adult viewers. To avoid cannibalization of successful DVD sales, the first 10 seasons will not be available online, not even for purchase.
