Senior Execs' Home Tech Use Growing

Though 20% of senior executives say they only use technology because they have to at work, 55% consider themselves to be tech savvy.

What's more, a growing number increasingly use and enjoy many forms of technology at home as well, according to a study by the Financial Times and Doremus, MarketingCharts reports.

The "Decision Dynamics" study, which examined the technology habits of over 300 senior executives worldwide, found that, except for cellphones and PDAs, executives overall use more types of new technology at home than at work:

The study also segmented participants into three categories based on their use of and comfort with technology, both at home and at work:

  • Tech Savvy individuals, who are competent with, and comfortable using technology at home and at work, make up 55% of survey participants.
  • Luddites, who do not enjoy technology but use it because of work demands, make up 20% of survey participants. As a result of their dislike for technology, they use less at home than the other two groups.
  • Technophiles, who are even more highly functional with technology than the Tech Savvy and avidly enjoy using it both at home and at work, comprise 15% of survey participants.

Though the tech-hungry Technophiles now make up only a small percentage of the entire group, their ranks are steadily growing.

Additional findings about Technophiles:

  • They own an average of 8.7 of the electronics products asked about in the survey, compared with 5.3 for the Tech Savvy and 2.5 for the Luddites.
  • 80% use a PDA/Blackberry at work, vs. half of the others.
  • 84% use an MP3 player regularly at home, and 55% use video gaming systems.
  • 65% use professional net marketing sites (vs. 51% for the Tech Savvy and 39% for the Luddites).
  • 41% contribute to blogs or post responses, twice as many as among the other segments.
  • They are twice as likely as the other two segments to use mobile devices to bank and shop.
  • Only 39% say that the Internet meets all their information needs.
  • When they read print, they are more likely to save it for reading on weekends or when traveling.

While Technophiles skew a bit younger overall, they are still well-represented in the 45-54 age group, tend to work for larger companies or for public companies, and are more likely to be found in the US, with significantly less representation in the UK, the study found.

"Senior-level decision-makers are at varying degrees of internet technology adoption, depending on culture, growth rate or how pervasive innovation and technology are within their own circle," said Ray Manna, director of interactive strategy for Doreumus. "Over the next few years, the consensus will grow around mobile and IP technologies with regard to efficiencies gained."

Manna also noted that the current recession, and executives' waiting for price reductions in new technologies are other factors that are having an impact on adoption rates.
