Search, Research Tool and Newsreader, Inform.com Launched

Inform.com, developed by New York startup Inform Technologies, is being launched today (Monday) and will not only allow readers to find articles on any topic from hundreds of newspapers and magazines (and some blogs) but will also alert them about other news reports that have any connection to the topic, reports the New York Times. At first glance, it resembles other newsreaders that can be customized by category. However, Inform also creates an index of important elements in the searched-for article.

Based on that index, it offers a list of

related stories about the main topic as well as people, places, organizations, industries and products mentioned in the text. The article itself appears as it would on the publication's site, including that publication's ads; the Inform links appear adjacent to it. Inform will also keep track of what registered users read and accordingly make article suggestions on their homepages. Inform will eventually serve ads based on users' news-reading behavior, based on the articles they view and the personalized channels they set up, reports ClickZ, which quotes Inform founder and CEO Neal Goldman: "Anytime we're showing a publisher's page, we're not monetizing that at all, but there are all these aggregated pages you're looking at that we can [serve] ads on." Ad inventory will include skyscrapers, banners and other standard display units. Initially, Inform will carry ads from networks. Goldman said video and RSS capabilities would be integrated into the beta platform by yearend.
