Search Box Enriches Embedded YouTube Videos

Search YouTube from here!

One week after changing the default format of video-viewing to widescreen (the better for HD material), YouTube now hosts a search bar in videos embedded to other sites.

The search bar enables users to run video searches on YouTube without leaving the site that embedded the video in the first place. Sample the feature in this video in which Wile E. Coyote finally catches Road Runner:

The search bar appears when the video is paused. It is also available when users click on the embed button in the lower right-hand corner.

When a search is run, query results appear and additional videos can be played without redirecting viewers to YouTube — potentially increasing the amount of time people spend on the site they're visiting.

Last month parent company Google began selling sponsored video ad space on YouTube, inviting the possibility that users running off-site queries could also be exposed to video ad messages.

Hulu.com, the professional content site co-owned by News Corp. and Fox, has long hosted a search feature for embedded videos. A recent survey found Hulu's ad revenue might equal YouTube's — an older, farther-reaching site — as soon as 2009.
