Online magazine Salon, which has been seeing an accelerated decline in subscribers in recent months, will sell online community The Well in order to focus on its primary business, reports the San Francisco Chronicle (via MediaBuyerPlanner). Salon's subscribers have dropped from 84,500 in March to 78,900 this week.
Salon chief executive Betsy Hambrecht said the online magazine is currently in flux, changing from a fairly static site to a more interactive one, with a new design and new content.
The Well has about 4,000 members and generates about $500,000 a year in revenue. Membership is down from its peak of about 12,000 members.
