Buying MP3s for pennies, courtesy of Mother Russia, is a practice that is finally seeing its close. As a condition for Russia's entry into the World Trade Organization, the Russian government has shut down AllOfMP3.com, concluding a long legal struggle, reports Ars Technica.
The government agreed to modify its laws to render AllOfMp3's activities illegal by June 1, which has only recently gone into effect.
However, the owners of AllOfMP3 have attempted to launch a new site called MP3Sparks.com, which makes the same claims as its previous incarnation, and also accepts logins from former members of AllOfMP3.
As of July 4, MP3Sparks was not running as planned, however.
For years the US has hounded Russia to take down AllOfMp3, going as far as adding it to its "notorious markets" list. Even after the site was formally outlawed, many assumed it would find a way to carry on.
And though major credit card companies pulled out of processing payments after the outlaw, voucher sites took their place, allowing customers to buy gift certificates that act as currency on the maverick destination.
